I don’t believe in resolutions but I do believe in setting healthy goals for the coming year. I like the idea of starting the new year with attainable goals that I can do each day or week that help me to live a healthier life. Last year one of my goals was to start each morning with drinking a full glass of water, before coffee, before anything to eat, yes even before looking at social media:) Not super ambitious but since I believe water is important in our diet its a great way to make sure I get my suggested 60-80oz in. (This varies depending on which dietary calendar you follow.)

Percentage of individuals that stick to their new years resolution

“Of those who make a New Year’s resolution, after 1 week 75% are still successful in keeping it. After two weeks, the number drops to 71%. After 1 month, the number drops again to 64%. And after 6 months, 46% of people who make a resolution are still successful in keeping it.”

I am happy to say that for the most part I stuck to a glass of water each morning. Not ever day but more often than not. Another goal I had set was to spend each morning reading something educational for at least 10 minutes. I started off strong with this one but  around month 3 the days started to get fewer and fewer until there were more days spent not reading.

This years goals

  • Strength training: I exercise regularly but I need to be more consistent in strength training.
“Lifting heavy weights is important for women over 50 because their bodies are naturally losing muscle mass. The best way for them to save the muscle they do have and to build new lean muscle mass is to lift weight limits that challenge them.”
  • Eat more greens: I love fruits and vegetables but I am a little lax on my greens.
  • Start each day with a 10 minute educational read: Yes, this made it back on the list!
  • And my favorite-live more boldly. Life is too short not to.

Please share with me some of your past goals attained or not and your goals for 2023. karen@50isjustanumber.com

Resolution: “A firm decision to do or not to do something.”
